OPHELIA ( 2013-2015)
Producer, writer, director, cinematographer, and editor.
Shakespeare’s Ophelia looms large in the lives of a woman and a painter who share her presence through an iconic painting. As they gravitate between dreams and reality they relive Ophelia’s pain, passion, and demise.
While reading Elaine Showalter’s essay Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism, I became interested in reinterpreting some of the myths handed down through history about women’s syndromes and psyches. The idea of transforming Ophelia, by giving her agency, was incorporated into my first draft. In 2015, I started producing Ophelia, an arduous project that was completed in 2018 and is now in post-production. This film emerges from my deep interest in the cinematic art of Maya Daren who, along with her cinematographer, Alexander Hackenschmied, conveys both a poetic and a well choreographed style.
